Sparks Presents Award to Rutherford County Adult Activity Center Client

Representative Mike Sparks recently recognized Dannie Mastin of the Rutherford County Adult Activity Center, a United Way partner agency, for his “commendable work ethic and determined spirit”.

Mastin has been deaf and blind since birth. Despite these obstacles, Mastin works two jobs—one at Rutherford Industries and another folding pizza boxes at Papa John’s in Murfreesboro.

District 49 Representative Mike Sparks toured Rutherford County Adult Activity Center, and was so impressed with Dannie’s story, he wanted to recognize him. He presented “The Honorable Dannie Mastin” with an official State of Tennessee Certificate of Recognition, which was also translated into Braille. Rep. Sparks commented, “It was amazing seeing how hard he’s working with the difficulties he’s had to overcome. There are people that could be working but don’t, yet this guy’s working two jobs. It’s very inspirational. He’s willing to work and he’s proving to people that no matter what obstacle you have in your life, you can overcome it. If you’re down and out, look to somebody like Dannie. This is the most inspirational thing I’ve personally ever witnessed.”

Sparks continued, “I’m very impressed with the Rutherford County Adult Activity Center and the good work that they’re doing here and the difference they’re making in many lives. And I appreciate Papa John’s for their work with Dannie.”

Zane Greer, from Papa John’s at Old Fort on Cason Lane, was present for the recognition and says Dannie is a model employee and an inspiration. “He just gets to work. We never have to wonder if it’s getting done. He’s very efficient. We’ve seen him assemble 1,065 boxes in three hours. And his boxes don’t come apart—every movement of his hands is making sure it stays together. He really cares about what he’s doing.”
