U.S. Bank recently received the 2011 Spirit of America Award and Bank of America received the Summit Award from United Way Worldwide. Both banks are engaged on a local level with the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties and are dedicated to improving the financial stability of individuals, families and local communities.
In 2010, U.S. Bank, recipient of the 2011 Spirit of America Award, ran a $12.5 million United Way campaign, an 11% increase from the previous year. Also, in 2010 U.S. Bank employees gave $38 million to charitable organizations (including United Way), and over 36,000 U.S. Bank employees volunteered, helping hundreds of thousands of people with home buying, basic banking and more.
Andy Jakes of U.S. Bank said, “We at U.S. Bank in Murfreesboro are pleased to be involved and participate in the United Way. The United Way is an awesome organization that helps many families across Rutherford County every day, and we feel it is important to give back a little of our time and financial support with which we have been blessed to help those less fortunate in our community.”
Bank of America, one of four companies receiving Summit Awards for exceptional community results, has invested more than $450 million with United Way since 1999. Bank of America was the first financial institution to nationally support United Way’s Financial Stability Partnership through $4.5 million in grants in addition to employee volunteers providing free tax preparation and filing assistance to lower-income working families, resulting in 1.5 million free tax returns and $2 billion in total tax refunds.
John F. Stein, Bank of America Tennessee President, said, “Through last year’s United Way campaign, more than $64,000 was pledged in support of United Way organizations across Middle Tennessee. United Way’s work to increase low-income individuals’ access to income building tools aligns with our own corporate social responsibility efforts to strengthen the communities we serve through philanthropy, volunteerism, lending and investing and responsible business practices.”
“Locally, both U.S. Bank and Bank of America are great supporters of United Way,” commented Brian D. Hercules, President and CEO of United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties. “They are both vital businesses in our community which is evident through their support of your United Way. We want to thank them for their support and congratulate them on their recent awards from United Way Worldwide.”
